Have you ever noticed when you subscribe to a magazine or renew your drivers license your junk mail increases? I once subscribed to TV Guide and accidently misspelled my name on the order form. After that the junk mail started rolling in with my misspelled name.

Make a donation to your favorite charity and watch the junk mail start coming in huge amounts. Charities are also known for selling your name. As an ex-veteran, I have donated to the Paralyzed Veterans group. I now get mail from every Veterans groups in the United States. Selling your name to various databases is big business.

Junk email or spam is another thing. Did you know that 76 percent of all spam comes from overseas? There’s not much chance of ever totally eliminating it. Congress thought of developing a “Do Not Email” list, but decided against it because it would only promote more spam. The spammers would purchase the email lists and proliferate their databases with good email addresses.

With the “Do Not Call” list, unsolicited telephone calls have subsided considerably. Although it appears lately there is a group in Canada and another one in Florida who don’t seem to pay attention to it. Unfortunately, when you publish your cell phone or home telephone number on your web site or on your blog, you just allowed all types of unsolicited calls because it now falls under the category of business-to-business calls. These calls are exempt from the “Do Not Call” registry.
